And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.
2 John 6 NIV
Spiritual Discipline: Hugging Jesus
Jesus showed His love for the Father by being perfectly obedient, even to death on a cross.
On the cross, Jesus revealed His great love for us too. Love is what held Him to the cross, not nails.
Obedience to Him can be painful for our flesh, and our skewed understanding makes us believe: If You love me, You’d let me do what I want. But what He tells us and what we come to agreement with as His disciples, is He knows what is best. And obeying Him is how we reveal our love to Him.
This week, when a call to obedience feels hard, painful, and your flesh wants to run screaming NO! think of Jesus on the cross.
When obedience pains you, consider it an opportunity to give Jesus a hug. A spiritual hug of love.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” —Jesus

What is Jesus teaching us about love?
What does it mean to lay down your life for your friends?
The Greek words translated “lay down your life” mean to put down or lay down your feelings, desires, affections and aversions. Jesus says letting go of our self-interest for someone else’s is how we express great love.
Can you think of a time you laid down your life, your wants, your way for someone else?
Did it feel like love? If not what was your motivation for putting aside your wants for another’s?
