Set aside ten to fifteen minutes to practice Examen at least twice this week.
Provided is a guide below, but we emphasize the word guide. Do not be concerned with following it exactly. It’s offered as a way to engage with God. But know He may lead you somewhere else. You have permission to just be and receive what He reveals and go where He leads.
Find a quiet spot. Have your journal and Bible nearby.
Sit quietly. Breathe in. Breathe out. Let go of the day’s worries and cares. Set aside distractions. Invite God into your space:
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. Flood this space. Fill the atmosphere.*
Seek His grace.
What’s on your heart?
Ask God for your heart’s desire. Don’t hold back. Pour out what’s on your heart as an offering.
Seek His response to your desire.
Imagine God gently gathering what you offered. Ask Him to speak to those desires.
Speak Lord, Your servant is listening.
Ask Him about your one word for the year.
Close with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving for your time together. Stay for a moment longer and delight in God’s presence.
*Note: Invitation prayer is taken from the lyrics of Francesca Battistelli’s song Holy Spirit.
