We continue building on our spiritual discipline of Examen. Set aside fifteen to twenty minutes to practice at least twice this week.
Note: Provided is a guide below, but we emphasize the word guide. Do not be concerned with following it exactly. It’s offered as a way to engage with God. But know He may lead you somewhere else. You have permission to just be and receive what He reveals and go where He leads.
Find a quiet spot.
Have your journal and Bible nearby.
Sit quietly. Breathe in. Breathe out.
Let go of the day’s worries and cares. Set aside distractions.
Invite God into your space:
Holy Spirit, You are welcome here. Flood this space. Fill the atmosphere.*
Seek His grace.
What’s on your heart?
Ask God for your heart’s desire.
Don’t hold back. Pour out what’s on your heart as an offering.
Seek His response to your desire.
Imagine God gently gathering what you offered.
Ask Him to speak to those desires.
Speak Lord, Your servant is listening.
Review your day much like watching a movie.
Where did you go? What did you do?
Who did you see or talk to?
When did you feel closest to God?
What moment did you feel far from God?
Consider your actions, reactions, emotions and general mood. Ask God about them, look deeper beyond the surface.
Close with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving for your time together. Stay for a moment longer and delight in God’s presence.
